Jurassic Park (InGen) ruined any possibility of me ever pronouncing this the way they want it to be. It’ll always be In-Gen-Icks out of my lips, like it’s a pharmaceutical company.

You know maybe some acronyms just sound good pronounced as words and some just don’t, ever think of that?

3 monthsFor those who are still getting their arrangements together to leave discord but are uncomfortable about running the client in the interim check out vesktop, an open source privacy-focused discord client that looks and feels like the official client without the same uncomfortable level of access to your user space.
Fucking based.

Cox Media Group got kicked off Google’s ad partner program a few years ago when 404 Media scooped that they had a feature called CMG Active Listening which did exactly this. They had a slide deck. Audio spying by advertisers is like doping in pro sports, everybody does it and you only get caught if you’re stupid. Remember back in 2013 a whistleblowing NSA contractor told us to put our phones in the fridge if we wanted to have a secret conversation? He had a slide deck, too. The western world is run by a cult of pedophiles, the fact that our phones listen in on us without our consent is not a stretch.
If a public services brings in more revenue than it spends it means the public is being robbed.
Aww RIP Tarder Sauce

6 monthsTIL that Processing actually predates Arduino. All these years I thought that it was the other way around and that Processing was a fork of Arduino. Thanks for the history lesson!

6 monthsthe Arduino IDE in C++
That’s actually pretty cool, but aren’t the majority of Arduino projects written in Arduino (Java superset)? At least all of mine are, as that is how I was originally taught to program it.
edit - Please don’t downvote people for seeking information. There was nothing disingenuous or underhanded about my comment, you’re either downvoting because you dislike people asking questions or don’t like something personal about my experience, which harms this community directly and also make the site feel unnecessarily hostile. This isn’t reddit.

6 monthsTrue, but you can’t just port arduino code to python or whatever language the raspberry picos compile from. An arduino project would have to be completely rewritten, as far as I’m aware.

Linux@programming.dev•Valve hopes the Steam Machine will make devs pay more attention to Linux anti-cheat supportEnglish
7 monthsYeah that’s a good point, on second read I see that the only mention of kernel-level anticheat made in the article were by the author, and nothing from the Valve rep themselves. Maybe I reacted too soon, and Valve is just trying to get devs warmed up to the idea of using better and less-intrusive anticheat systems.

7 monthsNo thanks, Valve. One reason I switched to Linux was a game ecosystem absent root-level surveillance software. There are many other, better ways to discourage cheating in games.

7 monthsSomething about the kind of person who has such a need to prove their ability to shoot other people in a game that they’re willing to give a corporation complete control over their home PC…

A change made through court cases in the mid-century. Basically the result of a neoliberal ideological campaign that first normalized the feduciary duty concept in the business world before forcing it on board rooms through the justice system. Before that, boards of companies could make decisions on ethical grounds and not just fiscal grounds. Today, that precedent has transformed boardrooms into terrifying financial automatons.

Kids these days don’t know about the Microsoft anti-monopoly suit sagas, or how the world felt about Bill Gates before he spent several decades and millions of dollars scrubbing his PR. They’ve always been awful and generally reviled, from the start.

He’s your average justice-minded libertarian small business owner. Misses the mark sometimes and maybe not always in the fight for exactly the right reasons, inflated sense of manic self-righteousness that probably corrodes his personal life, but a world built by people like him would still probably be a lot nicer than what we have now.

You can run plexserver as a service outside of docker. That’s how I ran it years ago, before I got comfortable with docker.

1 yearIt’s very nearly a synonym for value extraction. I guess specifically it refers to the consequences of value extraction on the web, but really I think Doctorow’s whole goal with that campaign was to make people aware of how awful venture capital and value extraction really are for us. I’m less concerned with preserving a canonical definition of enshittification as I am getting people aware of the consequences of capitalist financialization. As a well-published author himself, I’m sure Doctorow is well prepared for figurative death of the author :P

Whole internet running on the Dennis system, go figure.
