  • Just finished Metroid Fusion earlier, started Metroid Zero Mission. Replaying both. Probably going to get to the GBA Castlevania games soon as well.

Although I’m starting to get an itch for a Phantasy Star run again so by this time next week I’ll probably be busy with that. Thinking of going straight to Phantasy Star 3 this time. I’ve played PS1 the most by far and PS2 multiple times as well but I’ve only fully completed PS3 once so far.

  • That women’s stuff community that you helped promote already has some jackass commenting about it being “pointlessly gendered”. Meanwhile ‘Dull Gentleman’s Club’ doesn’t get the same treatment for some strange reason, I wonder why. Honestly this is one case where I hope the moderators do a little power tripping so that these kinds of communities can actually take off without the usual suspects dropping by to shit on them.

  • Yeah it’s nice to be able to import your list of subscriptions at least. But for comment history, I guess it depends what you’re getting out of a place like this. On Reddit, I liked going back sometimes and seeing what I was posting a couple of years ago. Especially if it’s personal shit, or even old review posts for movies or whatever. I like having a stable online presence or identity with a history to refer to.

  • [Removed by Reddit]

Been a minute since I’ve seen that. And that’s actually one huge advantage of the Fediverse. There can’t be a [Removed by Lemmy] because ‘Lemmy’ is a federation of servers with their own rules and regulations and aren’t even all based in the USA. And if any server starts these shenanigans, you can just move to another.

Although I do wish that profiles and comment history could be preserved from one server to another. That’s basically the last piece of the puzzle that would give the user a completely a completely free experience.

  • so many users continue to shill for such decisions

I think that something that a lot of people need to be reminded of here, especially ex Reddit moderators, is that the users have NEVER particularly been fans of the moderators. In fact the moderators on Reddit helped the admins bring Reddit to the point where it is now in the first place. Setting up automoderator to catch buzzwords out of context and make people’s comments disappear without notice or a trace is just as fucking dodgy as the admins flagging the word “Luigi”.

So no, it’s not a surprise that moderators getting into trouble for not falling in line with the admins doesn’t cause a mass exodus. Because most people don’t give a fuck about the moderators and would be glad to see them gone. With the way they have been abusing automoderator over the years, it wouldn’t make much of a difference if they were replaced by an automated system anyway.

So if you want people to come to Lemmy, stop acting like they give a shit about the moderator that treats them like dirt. Because that’ll probably have the opposite effect. I know that it did on me when all the mods were crying about the API and their modding tools. Start offering more reasons for why USERS should come here.

  • And now they’re apparently starting to set up shop on Lemmy too. Before I blocked it, I saw they’re on their best behaviour too. But mark my words, once the dating and flirting period is over, their shoes are going to come off and their feet are going to be up on the table.

I would’ve hoped that by now everyone would’ve learnt their lesson to never trust or listen to these people again. They flat out lie when they’re talking about things like ‘freedom’ and once they’re in power, they serve themselves and fuck over everyone else in society. And their leaders, that they don’t mind associating with and supporting are a bunch of inbred kiddie fiddlers and have been since long before Trump. And yet here we are again, letting them have a seat at the table.

These people cannot be fucking trusted. And I’m willing to bet that they’re going to be a source of a lot of downvote trolling too, in queer communities and women-centric communities.

  • personally i think they are sanitizing the site

Yeah, I also get the impression that they’re making it more ‘radio friendly’ for advertisers and shit. I used Reddit for a little bit over a decade, used to be a lot more rowdy there back then, and about two years ago I got hit with my first suspension for an anti religion, then my second and my third in the same year, also for stupid shit. Didn’t bother appealing the first two but managed to successfully appeal that third one. And I’ve been hanging on since then until a couple of months ago.

    posting behaviour, writing style

I think they would definitely catch me on these if I had to spend too much time there.

  • On the flip side of this, my main account was banned there but my alt account that I’ve also had for a few years now wasn’t. And I’ve even made a post or two with it there in the months since my main was banned, just to see.

And the funny thing is, the last time I was a banned for a few days (I managed to successfully appeal), they also banned my alt account that I had never even posted on before. Then unbanned it along with my main account after my appeal. So clearly their systems are aware that the two accounts are the same person.

  • I don’t really obsess about framerates myself and I’ve never had the kind of budget to have the latest and greatest parts but from what I’ve seen, somewhere around 30fps is fine.

And even though you didn’t ask, the last setting that I ever sacrifice is draw distance. I’ll turn down textures and shadows and reflections and everything else before I sacrifice draw distance. I don’t need realistic graphics to be able to immerse myself and have a good time. But things popping in and out of existence in front of your eyes are the ultimate immersion breaker for me.

  • social media is only as good as its user base

I’m with you on this one. Honestly I’m starting to consider jumping through all of the hoops required to get going on Reddit again myself. I can make do with few entertainment related subs but I keep thinking about how there’s a reason that no major women’s spaces from Reddit have been able to ever take off here on Lemmy. And the fact that LGBTQ+ communities needed their own instance with downvotes disabled as a solution against vote brigading. It gives this place a pretty dark undercurrent despite all of its supposed left wing fervour.

And then there’s the smart ass sarcastic replies to everything, like you’re experiencing in this thread, that I see in almost every single thread. I’ve seen a new user come to this platform and ask if there’s a gen z community, only to get no answers to the question and a bunch of people going “wHo CAreS abOUT LabElS and GrOUps? Look at me, I’m such a free thinker!” Yesterday I saw someone posting that they wish there were more pop music and sports related communities, only for all the replies to be along the lines of “FuCK pOP muSIc, wHo waNTs to SEe that? Look at me, I’m such a free thinker!” And it’s fucking annoying, if I’m being honest.

I don’t want to feel this way because I love the idea of this platform. But I dunno, I’m missing being able to discuss certain feminist issues in communities where I’m not going to be called a sexist, have people comparing nazism to astrology to try and make a point that women bad too instead of addressing issues that need addressing, and have comments removed.

There’s good people here too. People that have been very cool and encouraging. And who make the effort to actually answer people’s questions about communities without just shitting on them. But to me, those people seem to be a few lights shining in the darkness that covers everything else. And it’s starting to affect my mood negatively.

  • Haha I use adblock (uBlock Origin to be specific) in Firefox but I was talking about the app in particular. I actually have a hosts level ad blocker installed too but it’s disabled a lot of the time because every now and then it breaks something and I’m too lazy to toggle and reboot any time that happens.

Honestly though, I didn’t mind Reddit ads that much. I’ve spent the last few years questioning gender and shit and honestly, watching targeted advertising try to figure me out on various platforms has been oddly fun and affirming in a lot of cases that I’m on the right track, in the right place and asking the right questions.

Not that I’m defending it, no ads is of course better but I’ve seen much worse and more obnoxious styles of advertising than the way Reddit handled it. For all their faults, if they had to go down the advertising route, at least they managed to keep it somewhat more classy than almost everyone else.

  • Reddit is definitely trying the ragebait thing from what I saw before I left. With however the algorithm works there these days, /r/all actually got pretty good at showing me more of what I’m interested in (same as adverts to be honest, I did not mind getting random romance fantasy novels and shit advertised to me), which made me even more suspicious every time it would slip /r/conservative into my feed, even if the post only had like 10 upvotes.

And maybe it’s just in my imagination but I would especially start seeing subs like conservative after literally just being active in subreddits that shit on conservatives. So it felt a lot to me like Reddit’s algorithm was actively trying to bait me at times to get into fights in places I should just ignore or block.

  • Yeah, this kind of thing makes me glad that I got banned from Reddit too. People jump on any excuse to shit on women there. The place seems progressive on the surface and has some pretty great feminist and queer communities but there has always been this underlying current there in the larger Reddit.

People dogpile and seem to almost take glee when there’s a chance to shit on a woman for something. It gives me the impression that they just love to jump on any chance they get to go “See? The ‘females’ are also bad.” But it comes with 10x the spite and hate, like with Ellen Pao versus anything that has happened on Reddit since. If they had a female CEO during the API thing, they would’ve tanked.

Another one of my favourites was a thread discussing a 10km fun run for mostly non serious athletes, where it was suggested that it was a little silly to have separate male and female categories (I think it might have even involveda woman getting best time but a lesser prize). And the thread kinda filled up with walls of text about hand grip strength and in depth analysis on Olympic athletes. For a fun run.

But imagine going around calling teenage girls “whores”. What pieces of shit. Funnily enough, the comment that got me banned from Reddit was a comment calling out men in general for allowing men in general to be pieces of shit (in a subreddit meant for calling out misogyny no less). But calling teenage girls “whores” is ok. I guess I’d expect nothing less from the ex moderator of jailbait.
