  • Is it supposed to work, yes. But I’ve seen hundreds of computers not work right away and have to reinstall drivers, toggle things on and off swap the cords, then that cord work on another machine right next to it while the other cord worked in its place. Displayport should be great, but I’ve also seen ~20 of them just split and die at the end as well. Not the most durable, but that’s probably manufacturing issues.

That said I currently have to work on a Mac mini at some times, and that uses usb-c to c… And I have to disconnect the cable and reconnect it after near every reboot to get the monitor to recognize.

  • I don’t want to give grok/such the traffic but is it much less personable? Like did some of these people become friends with an AI, then get forced to move to an AI that treats them worse?

I’ve never tried to have a conversation with one like that. I did try to ask one to help me figure out what was wrong with a docker container I was trying to set up. Think I ended up just tossing it and starting from scratch after I had clearly set something up wrong initially, then got the AI just went in loops trying to get me to try the same things over and over. Haven’t tried them recently

  • Unless the chart is readable on the bus driving towards you and you’re deciding if you want to get on, yes. Step 1 for getting on a bus shouldn’t be, access the Internet in my opinion. Nor should every other corner need to have signage and what not that blocks walking access and the view of drivers/pedestrians if we are going to share the same traveling spaces. I just want to see the bus, and say I can take that up 15 blocks to save the walk in the rain.

  • I partitioned 80gb off for work and installed Windows 10 on it. Install was fast, it found all of the drivers itself and had no bloatware using the Windows Media Creation Tool for another machine. Every device I have plugged into it or connected via Bluetooth has just worked. I don’t have a printer, but I imagine if you have an old printer that you will have to fuck around with drivers to get it working if you can’t use a generalized pcl driver for it. The entire OS with LibreOffice, and the work software I need runs on ~48gb with more than 30gb still free if I need random stuff but I don’t think I will as I’ve been using it for 2 weeks already.

I don’t have a Microsoft account signed into anything, and when I went to Windows Updates the first time I clicked the button that said “Don’t upgrade to Windows 11”.

Overall the OS is solid, I think it’s mostly people worrying about bloatware (which often comes from Manufacturers, though Windows does some) and advertisements, and Microsoft trying to monitor people.

  • True, but in the U.S. it’s illegal to upload not download/stream. So you should be fine. Especially with large companies downloading terabytes of data to train AI and fighting that it should be overlooked. You don’t upload any data, and can in theory download movies/shows if you had space and wanted to watch them later. That’s rare for me though. I use a RustDesk setup if I want to do so, and remote in from my phone’s start the movie. Pause, hit download and it downloads not as a torrent but as a normal download. A .mkv or such, then play with a video player.

Then again, I’m from dbzero, piracy is kind of our thing

  • I set up Streamio on pop_os with a paid plug in $15 for 180 day subscription. It has access to just about any movie/movie I could ever want to watch. Which since it is streaming them it takes up no room on the drive. Plugged it into my tvs HDMI port and use a mouse keyboard on the coffee table. The is alright, it’s best to know a name to searcg, but it’s pretty spiffy without, you can scroll forever it seems. (Most of the info is for other shit, in Pop it took maybe 15 mins setup, mostly creating accounts for the site. I installed it on Mint Cinnamon, and my fiancees W11 laptop so she can watch stuff in the room

Guide I followed in case someone is interested in such:

I saved it from a old.reddit post in case I ever wanted to replicate it again.

Ultimate guide to Stremio + Torrentio + RD Guide Opening Notes (important stuff, please read) This configuration of the Stremio app will allow you to stream movies/TV from most devices, with the exception being IOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad. If you want to stream from those devices, this guide is not for you.

You can use this Stremio configuration to stream movies/TV on most other platforms, including Windows, Mac, Android, FireOS (includes Fire Stick and Fire TV), Linux, AndroidTV, and even the Steam Deck.

However, the Stremio setup guide will require that you use a Windows, Mac, Linux, or Android device. Please don’t attempt the setup steps on another device.

Additional information for FireOS (includes Fire Stick and Fire TV) and Linux devices is located below the Stremio setup guide, but you need to go through the Stremio setup guide beforehand with a required device (Refer to previous bullet point).

Stremio Setup Guide Part 1: Stremio

For Windows/Mac users - Go to https://www.stremio.com/ and download the relevant client for your platform

For Android users - Install Stremio through the Google Play Store: Stremio - Apps on Google Play

Open Stremio and sign up with email or Facebook

    Part 2: Real Debrid

    Go to https://real-debrid.com/

    Go to Premium Offers

Choose a package and subscribe. I found that using Amazon Pay as the payment method is the most convenient (if you have an Amazon account)

    Part 3: Torrentio

Go to Torrentio Lite - Stremio Addon

Towards the bottom of the page, select the “Debrid Provider” option and select “Real Debrid” from the drop-down menu. This will cause a new text box to appear underneath.

Copy the API key from this link https://real-debrid.com/apitoken and paste it into the “RealDebrid API Key**”** box

In the Debrid Options menu: Check the box “Don’t show download to debrid links” and leave the other boxes unchecked.

Click “Install” at the bottom. It should open the Stremio app and prompt you with an “Install Addon” window. Click the green install button at the bottom.

Optional but highly Recommended - In Stremio, click the puzzle piece in the top right to view your addons. Click “My Addons” and uninstall the “WatchHub” addon. It’s an eyesore and it clutters your streams list.

Now that you have completed the setup, you may install Stremio on any device of your choice (excluding IOS) and log in to your account to start streaming Movies/TV. Refer to the section below for Stremio installation on FireOS devices (Fire Stick, FireTV).

FireOS devices (Fire Stick, FireTV) After you have gone through the setup on another device, watch this video on how to install Stremio on your FireOS device https://youtu.be/U1o-scADuIg and then log into your account in the Stremio app. At this point you’re good to stream. It will download everything that you just set up and sync your shows across all devices. However, some FireOS devices may not be capable of 4k streaming.

Edit 10/16/2023 - if you are on firestick, make sure to download the Android TV apk from the Stremio downloads section. The youtube video linked above was created before Stremio had an Android TV version. The UI is much improved over the base android UI for use on a smart tv.

Linux Use the flatpak and everything should work. At the time of making this guide, I had issues in the setup process on Linux but I’m pretty sure that was my fault for having weird defaults on my Arch install. You should be able to complete the setup process on Linux without issues and streaming is guaranteed to work. In the case that you run into issues, Just complete the setup steps on a recommended device first, then install and log into the Stremio app on your Linux device.

Additional information YOU DO NOT NEED A VPN.

Account sharing: You should only share your Stremio account with people who are connected to the same WiFi network as you. If you do not follow this rule, your Real Debrid account may be suspended.

    Bugs/Glitches:

Sometimes, an episode of a show or a movie will display “No streams found” even though it should be available. This has only happened to me a handful of times, but the problem will resolve itself eventually.

If the picture is black but the audio is still playing, you should go back and select a stream with a different resolution.

Issue: No streams are appearing at all, or none of them work. Here are the possible explanations:

Your Real Debrid Subscription has expired. Go to Real-Debrid and check your account status.

Real Debrid servers are down/undergoing maintenance. Wait an hour or so, and then try again.

You made a mistake while following the guide. My DMs are open if you can’t figure it out. I’ll probably try to help.

Credit to u/OnlyTheCruxes for most of this stuff because I kinda just copied their guide and added more detail based on my own personal experience with the setup process (Original guide: Installing Stremino + Torrentio + Real Debird )

  • I installed a Linux server on an old laptop, then installed Jellyfin. It’s like a Walmart special from 8 years ago, so no graphics card outside of the integrated graphics. Doesn’t matter. I disabled sleep, and power saving settings on the Wi-Fi. I had a USB external 1tb drive hooked to it. The laptop doesn’t even have support for a 5ghz wifi connection. No issues at all. I can run 2 movies at 1080p in different rooms off the external USB drive without issue. Just go for it. I installed RustDesk on it so wherever I am I can remote to it, turn on the VPN and kick off a torrent for whatever movie someone mentioned while at work or what not. Then when I get home it’s there.

  • Yeah, I’m 35 now and I find myself doing better if I just treat them as a casual gathering but I struggle sometimes with not acting extremely mature at all times. I’m not saying unprofessional things, but I will joke, or laugh to often for some people. Had one that someone called me out for having to stand up a bottle that had liquid in it with a screw on lid. Can’t remember what the product was but I had a bit of an ADHD moment or something where I just figured, that might leak at some point, and stood it up and one of the interviews asked “did you have to do that?”. I laughed it off but it seems a strange thing to ask me when looking back at it.

  • I think for many people it has to do with nervousness. Also power dynamics. When you already have the job, and especially after being there for a couple months, getting on with your coworkers is easy and discussions aren’t awkward usually. A random stranger doing an interview that decides whether or not you become homeless puts pressure on people, and they dont know anything about their personality. Should I joke, what do they find funny, do they find that unprofessional, am I being to quiet, do I need to ask more questions, should I bother asking any.

A few weeks after working with Becky I know the exact number of questions to ask her and how we mesh/joke intertwine etc.

  • I know my comment had nothing to do with free speech, I was saying that the user in question got banned for arguing the rules of the establishment. Whether I agree with the ban or not, if it is a written policy of the community, that is the social contract you are committing to when participating in that community.

From the article: “Reddit continues to be anti-free speech,” Cedric Hohnstadt said on X. “I just got a lifetime ban from the ‘comics’ subreddit. Yesterday, I posted a humor comic that got over 5,400 upvotes. Then I noticed that there was a pinned post from the moderators saying that comics linked from X could no longer be shared because Musk gave a Nazi salute. I commented saying no he didn’t. The moderator accused me of being pro-Nazi, banned me permanently for life, and deleted all my past posts from the ‘comics’ subreddit.”

None of the issue at hand pertains to free speech. The moderator might be an ass, but it’s their choice to ban users from their community for violating set policies.

It would be like me arguing with the asklemmy community about the title not being in the form of a question and them banning me and me screaming “my freedom of speech!”. Nah, they just have a rules you have to follow to participate.

  • From what I understand from the article they did remove the post because it violated policy. It appears to me he got banned after arguing with the moderator that it wasn’t a Nazi salute. My views aside, it was the person arguing the policies of the establishment shouldn’t exist that got him banned from the establishment, not the post itself.

Edit: I may have this wrong though, I didn’t try to investigate anything, the fact that he was bitching about it on X was enough for me to determine he wasn’t worth my time. (Yet here I am talking about it … damnit)
