  • Having a GPU is nice if you start letting other people access your Jellyfin server; transcoding for some video files can be tough on the CPU, and if it’s trying to do more than one at a time, stuff can get laggy. But unfortunately, trying to get my ancient GPUs to do anything has been a nightmare! Besides the architecture itself being old, it seemed as though Nvidia deprecated some of the features I needed on the official drivers, and the Nouveau docs have been a headache to sort through. I think, maybe, probably, it’s technically possible, but I’m burned out on messing with it at the moment.

That 970 might be recent enough to work with a little less hassle though!

  • To be fair, as the biggest instance, .world deals with the most bots and spam of any instance. Not surprising whatever countermeasures they’ve implemented also involve blocking some VPN-associated addresses; they’ve probably been used by bots before and were blocked due to having been abused, not specifically because they’re associated with a VPN.

  • Yeah I have issues with my home setup at least that often. I can only think of two occasions where the solution took more effort than a reboot. Maybe we’re all just old enough for “every 6 months” to feel like every 5 mins

To clarify, by “issues” I mean “system stoppages not precipitated by me fucking with something.” I screw up my own system way more often than that lol

  • Windows doesn’t generally break things? Weird, I wonder why I’ve been having to tour my clients’ homes and having to either circumvent their arbitrary 11 requirements or install a pirated version of 10 LTSC. Must be a fluke. Besides, Microsoft is following every tech company and trying to replace actual programmers with AI, so I’m sure they’ll never fuck anything up again.

And the instructions online for how to fix things are NEVER easier. What on earth? Troubleshooting Windows for the last 15 years has meant browsing a dozen forum posts with your exact issue and getting nothing but a bunch of script-following helpdesk people taking 3 paragraphs to ultimately tell you to restart your computer. And now, on top of all that garbage, you have to sort past a bunch of generated garbage articles. Better hope someone posted your problem on Reddit and didn’t get their post deleted for whatever reason cuz there’s no way to find anything useful otherwise
