Crazy how well *nix did back in '05, now that there are so many quality of life improvements, the near takeover of the web platform for most apps, M365 existing, Wine compatibility improvements, and the ease of management for virtuals & rdp/vnc when something must be on Windows, most of their concerns have hopefully been eliminated.

Mobile non-Android Linux on more than developer devices and 5 year old tech would be the largest impact, especially if you could pull off half of what the Liberux Nexx was promising. An all in one convergent pro-privacy device with flagship hardware would be a game changer. Possibly more urgent now that Google is pushing Android to be more locked down.

Desktops are primarily used by hobbyists (mostly gaming), creators, and businesses. To get Linux more there you need OEM installs and more driver support, Adobe and other big holdouts finally porting their stuff, and alternatives to AD respectively.

Yes, but there are some Excel formulas that LibreOffice can’t do and while there is now some VBA compatibility its not 100%

Commercial Windows licenses aren’t typically covered by the equipment installers (or if they are, the cost is passed on to you instead of subsidizing it), have expiration dates, and you’ll want security updates.

I think the comment had the implication that the system would be running on Windows if not Ubuntu.

Linux Mint and PopOS are usually listed as friendly distros and are derivatives of Ubuntu without Ubuntu controversies like Snap. Mint even has an alternative direct Debian base skipping some Ubuntu packages, so might be ironically closer to old Ubuntu in that flavor.

If you’re open to going non-debian, Manjaro is often sold as the more user friendly Arch. (Edit - a recent Manjaro controversy has people recommending EndeavorOS instead for an Arch wrapper. I’ve not tried that one myself).

Debian or Arch aren’t bad to use directly either and are far more newbie friendly than they were a decade ago even if not as out of the box opinionated as their derivatives.

In addition to Joplin, Logseq is really great too, though with more of a text-first, outline based, zettle approach.

You can’t turn pictrs off as a configuration setting?

Can CSAM distributors use it as a test suite for workarounds?
