On the whole it’s gone way downhill since the API fiasco in my opinion. The only thing worth a damn on Reddit nowadays is that some specific communities are better than elsewhere (sports, mental health, niche hobbies) but only because discussion boards (php) have mostly died and Facebook somehow manages to even MORE toxic as far as racism, sexism, etc.

It’s depressing. At one time Reddit on the whole as an entity (not the company, the community) was very vibrant and amazing.

Absolutely. Often there are no fucking useful search results on Google at all besides Reddit threads…

I don’t know that anything will be the same because it took so long for everyone to gather there and make 100,000 thriving communities about every random little thing from rare diseases to Pokémon made from toilet paper tubes, sexy John Oliver, kids getting hit on the head. If got interested in some random TV show, you could find a sub where there would be 100 interesting conversations about it. That just doesn’t exist outside of Reddit. Where even could it? Fucking Quora? Facebook groups?

I don’t know what anyone could have done to preserve it though. If it’s POSSIBLE to slap a million ads on it and make a billion dollars, but definitely ruin it forever…it’s inevitable. Nothing can stop that.

I wonder if they don’t even want mods. Just AI/algorithms and ads. What is 100 well moderated, mindful discussions worth compared to a single, well targeted ad?

I’m sorry. The corporate assholes don’t deserve to pad their fat wallets based on your free labor, but it’s still absolutely the loss of something you love when you step away and it hurts. I’m still grieving losing Apollo and all of the goofy, weird ass little subs and brilliant human beings who made me laugh and cry every day on Reddit. It’s not been replaced in my life. It took millions of us almost 20 years to make that stupid website something incredible…I can’t deny that it was incredible at points.

It’s gone, it’s just a website now and an app with ads every 3rd pixel just like the rest. There is still some good content and good people, just as there are on TikTok, Bookface, X and insta. The decent shit that is there, on all of the platforms, is overwhelmed by their horrible algorithm trying to sell you shit and increase engagement to monetize your every click.

This specific situation makes some sense or in cases where brigading actually happened and it was a tool to stem it…I think nowadays that isn’t the case anymore and OP’s is an example of advocacy going little too far. Like if you listen Spotify you can’t come to my house for Christmas dinner because by doing so you promote Joe Rogan and not paying artists … and that is against my values. Really?

I don’t even recognize the site anymore. Old reddit is ok but I never used it much, I’ve used nothing but Alien Blue, Apollo etc for the longest time.

That infographic with the most profitable companies in the world…both of them are still on it. And Reddit wants to be.

Ugh…I feel this. Recently have been struggling with tennis elbow and without Reddit all I would have had was shitty google web results…blogs, bullshit articles full of clickbait and ads with the same 5 tips. Including reddit I was able to figured out what the actual best information was…without the influence of big media bullshit.

I did check mastodon and Lemmy…nothing really.

The shitty thing is the biggest value reddit has at this point is the years of valuable information WE put into it. Facts and opinions ranked and critiqued and crowdsourced. Our best stories, photos, resources. Despite what people tell themselves, we don’t own any of it. It sucks.

It kind of looks like Google’s stuff (Drive, Email) which to be honest is starting to feel dated.

Hoping I get the format right

MySpace, digg, Yahoo, Mapquest, Hotmail, icanhazcheeseburger, Fark…still exist…possibly still make money even. But just because Reddit still has traffic and activism users doesn’t mean it won’t implode at some point. There are users and traffic because of content. Maybe it will go on fine without us but would not be at all surprised if it went downhill significantly in the next few years and the money dries up and people like Steve Huffman will have to get real jobs
