Programming@programming.dev•AI still doesn't work very well, businesses are faking it, and a reckoning is coming
3 monthsBusinesses were failing even before AI. If I cannot eventually speak to a human on a telephone then the whole human layer is gone and I no longer want to do business with that entity.

It’s shit like this that make me want to pursue a career in digging ditches with just a shovel, a bag of sandwiches, a thermos of coffee and the warm sunshine. Fuck the modern world. It jumped the rail a while ago now.
“We’re living in the future. I’ll tell you how I know. I read it in the paper. Fifteen years ago.”
I agree with Ryan Gosling on this.
Not everyone has a product sponsorship. /s

Linux@programming.dev•Does anyone have a good suggestion for a markdown note organiser?
4 monthsI use paper scribblers and a pen or pencil, plus an index book so I can compile what I am entering, but I’m not in any hurry though. /s

Reddit@lemmy.world•Reddit, Meta, and Google Voluntarily Gave DHS Info of Anti-ICE Users, Report Says
4 monthsIn about 10 years we will be reading articles like “Do you remember Reddit, Meta and Google?”. This shit can only go on for so long before other alternatives present themselves.

5 monthsThe Corp Wars. Too many old sci-fi movies saw this coming. Too many. Oh the (lack of) humanity!
Let me put it this way then. I wonder if they will give him credit for his knowledge because he proved he knows what “alphabetical order” is. Will he lose any credit because he didn’t follow, or misunderstood, the question? Will he be marked on what he knows or how he understands the query?

I remember a day when hackers used to be sponsored privately. /s
I like it. He didn’t meet the assignment but he proved his knowledge. Now to see if they mark on knowledge learnt or subjugation.

5 monthsI thought he just bought shit for a dollar and sold it for two. That’s pretty common even though he took a big bite of the customer base due to right place/right time dynamics. Why does falling into a shit load of money all of a sudden make you think that you know best on how society should proceed. It’s not just Bezos. Every single billionaire thinks that. Fuck 'em all.

The way the tech world has unfolded in the last 25 years is bound to make most people cynical.
When growing up in the 70’s “computer programmers” were assumed to be geniuses. Nowadays they are maybe one tier above fast food workers. What a world!
The best, brightest, most complicated thing I’ve done in IT became obsolete in 4 years.

Programming@programming.dev•How much are SOLID principles in OOP programming (and JVM languages specifically) just a mindless following of a set of ideas that aren't always the best solution?
8 monthsOOP is good in a vacuum. In real life, where deadlines apply, you’re going to get some ugly stuff under the hood, even though the app or system seems to work.

I’d start with logic, infrastructure and design first. Once that is locked in they can use any language to move forward as it’s only syntax you need to learn once your logic and design is solid. I’d offer them a choice of three different languages to achieve the same end result of the assignment. This shows them the importance of logic and design and the transference of skills.
