This reminds me of a hilarious side quest in The Witcher 3 where a wizard gets locked out of his tower because he didn’t know it was equipped with a Defensive Regulatory Magicon (DRM) when he bought it and the only way to fix it is with Gottfried’s Omni-opening Grimoire (GOG). GOG is the game store started by CD Projekt to sell DRM free copies of old games.

Although baptism probably has its roots in the Mikva, which is a ritual cleansing, that’s not really the significance within Christianity. Baptism is not a washing away of sins, or impurity, but is rather a symbolic death and resurrection. The Apostle Paul, an early codifier of Christian doctrine whose letters became part of the Christian Bible wrote as follows in Romans chapter 6
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
This has the same end effect- the removal of sin and purification, but the conception is totally different.
It started as a joke about trans/cross dressing coders claiming that their feminine knee high socks were “programming socks” to assist in coding when found by roommates and then somehow it became the idea that all of this stuff was necessary for programming
Just start coding and learn as you go. I know that sounds daunting but I feel like there’s not really another way to learn on your own that actually works. I wouldn’t worry about a specific language at the start, whatever you learn will transfer pretty easily. I would start with thinking “What would be something cool to program?” And just seeing if you can do it or maybe a simple version. ChatGPT is amazing for learning to code as well. If you get stuck somewhere and need clarification or need help interpreting why your code is giving an error just ask ChatGPT and it can explain - just be sure that you actually understand what it is saying and why instead of just copy and pasting its code. This is how you actually get better instead of just “vibe coding.”
In my opinion, you’ll never get good at coding just going through “code academy” or similar gamified services. It’s more about practice and getting some experience under your belt. It’s like trying to learn how to be a good baseball player from reading books if you don’t go out on the field and play some baseball, or trying to learn the guitar without a guitar in your hand.
MIT has a really good beginner’s course for free that helps a lot with theory and background but IMO it’s based too much on theory for most people to actually build skills just from following it without work outside of the course.

For games I recommend just learning to mod first or learn how to make a simple game first and follow along learning exactly how it works at each step. I learned a lot digging into garry’s mod, TF2, and Minecraft mods back in the day.

How much do those tapes cost if purchased in bulk? I am trying to figure out how much a petabyte storage system costs, and how much physical space this would take up, and how much electricity it would require to run. I had a lot of trouble finding this information on Google because I know so little about tape storage and don’t know what all I would need. I am probably not going to actually do anything with this but I am curious because I had this idea for a product and can’t get it out of my mind. The most important part (for the hardware portion) is having nearly a petabyte of physical, local storage. I am aware this would be quite expensive and relatively large, but the product would be intended for governments and companies not individuals.

How much did this system cost? I have an idea for a product and one of the key parts of it is having a huge amount of local storage. I would need like 10x what you have though.
Sauce plus and dropout as well. Basically run by youtubers to make content without relying on YouTube. A lot of this is running on pre-existing tech for running a streaming service and I assume it’s dependent on AWS (Amazon) hosting but yeah lots of smaller paid streaming services run by youtubers because YouTube sucks. I believe sauce plus is essentially the same as Floatplane on the backend, they mentioned working with LTT to make it.
It’s just so weird to me. I’ve worked at a few big companies and Matlab was just kind of out of the question at any of them. It was Excel or Python
What a waste of money when Python is free
Matlab sucks ass no real engineers use it, only college kids.

Reddit@lemmy.world•Reddit will keep old Reddit online ‘as long as people are using it,’ says CEO
1 yearThe only reason I’m here in the first place is because it’s ridiculously obvious that they’re killing old reddit soon. Every time they add some new bullshit feature it breaks our reddit just a little more and it becomes less and less usable. Meanwhile new reddit is also becoming less and less usable as they try to make it Facebook 2.0. It’s all getting enshittified very quickly.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is selfhosting your Girlfriend a good idea? 😂English
1 yearI feel like if you had put half the time and effort it took to do this into improving yourself and going outside you could have at least gone on some dates with real women at this point. Talking to an AI chatbot is not the same as human connection and will only lead to further depression as you realize that no matter how much you “love” your AI girlfriend she will never truly love you back because she can’t think or feel, and fundamentally isn’t real.

Unfortunately if you live in a shithole state you can’t look at most of it.
