It’s more than that for me. I typically hate doing repetitive tasks but I love automating them and seeing my scripts or apps run or just checking a dashboard feels better.

I won’t get into too much of a rant about this, but I’m in DevOps but I used to be a full-stack dev (as in doing nothing well).

My UI lead is just SO proud that he doesn’t need to write any code by hand and can show you how to do it too! Guess what he doesn’t do? Doesn’t fix up or speed up the website. We integrate with two of our sister products. One of them by sharing our UI packages through our private NPM repo and the other by iframe. Both are done so poorly at a fundamental level because our NPM packages are just SO poorly put together that if you spent any time looking at the output, you’ll see that it’s like typescript but not really. It’s not CJS nor does it really do ESM. Our sister websites needs to use another bundler to import these packages.

Our website is just slow too. Forget about deferred stuff or tighter bundles or reducing the page load times … just putting out more with AI is the key now. Let’s just forget about fundamentals.

Btw, you probably already know this, but if you don’t. The later versions of Node can run typescript natively. By “run”, I mean, it can run a subset of the language, if your project indirectly or indirectly references a file that has “decorators” or something like that, then you’ll need to use another compiler.

ts-node or tsx are runners that I use typically if I just want to “run” something. They’re basically zero config runners and I can debug with them with VS Code.

I’m a former .NET dev … I stopped quite a few years ago after I joined a Bay Area company. It was quite a change. React 1 was just coming out and I used to just write bad JS on my webpages and I had to rewrite our front-end in React. Also, ES5 or 6 or whatever was getting popular and we had to transition from CoffeeScript.

The JS world gave me whiplash after doing so many years of Enterprise .NET. The .NET tools felt so much more polished.

The fundamentals of Node to me were different than .NET. .NET felt like it had a lot more cruft and “magic” at first. With Node it felt deceptively simpler at first. Then when the require syntax was going away and we had imports but then it wasn’t a real import. It was a TypeScript import or a webpack import that did a require behind the scenes. Then I had to understand why we used typescript but then what was the point of tsc vs babel vs webpack vs esbuild what their roles were and I kind got a bit obsessed with understanding what they did and what was happening under the hood. Then Node officially did do import and I had to understand what that was all about and how it affected our compilers or bundlers.

Remember to add --enable-source-maps and as long as your tools are configured properly it should point to the right line!

I’ve always liked vim but one thing that I really loved about it was when I started using vim mode in zsh.

Being able to just navigate through commands in my terminal and easily highlight and edit and all that … it’s so good.

It’s what I use when I need a bit of a UI for some things. I use the terminal mostly but Lazygit is great.

Yeah, I didn’t see the use for them until I got further into it over just cloning. Your worktree “folders” share the same git history and stuff. So you can stash in one and apply in the other. If you do a fetch in one, it fetches for all of them.

Whether it’s worth it for others to learn these just for those things is hard to say. I picked it up simply because I was bored and wanted to pick up a new “thing”.

Compiling in the web world can also include … type checking which I think is good, minifying code which is good, bundling code which is good. I understand that in this article that they allude to the fact that those can be bad things because devs just abuse it like expecting JavaScript to tree shake and since they don’t understand how tree-shaking works, they will just assume it does and accidentally bloat their output.

Also some static site generators could do things that authors and stuff don’t think about like accessibility and all that.

lol yes I understand I know I sound silly. My home/end aren’t typical on my keyboard. It’s like function and stuff, which breaks my flow for something I do so often.

I use VS Code mainly and I always want to go to the end of a line and beginning. On Mac it’s like CTRL+E and CTRL+A respectively. On Windows, I was like, I guess I could do Windows Key and arrows but it felt off. Installing Vim bindings on VS Code just fixed this all for me. I love it.

[edit] for non-VIM users, you can skip words and go-to braces (and delete what’s in them) and highlight within quotes very easily … for function search, the built-in VS Code is really good too. I also have Harpoon installed to hop between files. If it doesn’t appeal to you, then that’s cool too! Whatever keeps you in there. [/edit]

I’ve tried setting up my own vim stuff and I always bail out because I can’t figure something out. I feel like I need to really sit with it and I’d have the perfect set up for me.

Lastly, I’ve installed vim for zsh and it’s the best. I can hop all around my terminal and highlight and remove things. It’s so beautiful.

Not a word of a lie, I saw a “segmentation fault” error in JavaScript.

Can’t remember how we resolved it, but it did blow my mind.

Yeah, I’m not in any way medically anything but I think I remember Dr Mike or one of those talking about how brain death is considered death or something like that.

I started with C++ and went to Java to .NET to Javascript and now to Terraform.

I know this is all a joke but there’s something definitely different with the ones above and the ones below. There’s a bit of satisfaction you can get sometimes when you’re working with memory directly and getting faster feedback (yes, there’s more math back then and it wasn’t easy to look stuff up, for sure). However, there’s new challenges nowadays … there’s so many layers on top of layers. I feel as though Stack Overflow and ChatGPT are so needed because the error messages and things we give are obfuscated or unclear (not always any library author’s fault as there’s compatibility issues, etc)

We’re doing serverless stuff at my current company and none of our devs run code locally. They have to upload it using CDK or Serverless Framework to run on the cloud. We don’t use SST so we can’t set breakpoints but like that’s a lot of crap inbetween just running your code already. Not even getting into the libraries and transpilers and stuff we use. I spent like a few weeks over Christmas to get our devs to run the code locally. Guess what? None of them use it because they’re so use to uploading it. I was like, "you can put breakpoints in it! you can have nodemon and it instant reloads! nope, none of them care … "
