Devil’s advocate here. Does not pretty much any post on the subject of politics that is not simply reporting constitute an attempt to manipulate public opinion? Are they specifically referencing nation states trying to influence public opinion?

On the one hand I think reddit is getting really bad. On the other hand I’m not sure you can make sweeping statements about the state of reddit based on your negative interaction with one moderator.

While most people on Lemmy are going to know what this means, the person who wrote this error message was definitely trying to be cute with that phrasing.

Since VPN users share IPs it is very possible that someone using the same IP address did something ban worthy.

And really just hurts people who are searching for actual human answers to questions later.

This isn’t true. Tried it on two different VPN providers, neither are blocked. They may be blocking individual ips/netblocks as abuse happens which…yeah, don’t fool yourself, a lot of people who use vpns want to use them for doing things that they absolutely should be banned for.

Repost bots (and repost top comment bots) are pretty rampant. A lot of subs have changed pretty significantly because their entire mod team left. In general I get the sense it’s a lot more people now who consider reddit “social media” compared to before. Site isn’t dead for sure but it’s gone down in quality significantly.

But a lot of developers do do exactly that. They not only distribute binaries on their github, it is the only place where they distribute binaries. Github should probably recognize that it is a common use case and accommodate it better.

I’m also sure that a lot of people, like myself, took no notice of what specific package this user was complaining about, and are simply agreeing with the general sentiment that github could make things easier for non-technical users (which would, in turn, make it easier for developers since they would not need to field questions from users about how they download the software).

To strain your metaphor, I think what most people are looking for is a sign that says “FOOD COURT THIS WAY ->”

If they just had a prominent link to “download latest stable version” in a consistent place, people wouldn’t be so confused (and devs wouldn’t have to do extra work to try and make it obvious).

This sounds like it’s gonna be the best approach without outright blocking all NSFW posts. I wish there was something more akin to reddit /r/popular for the fediverse, though.
