I wanted to fork too but wanted a more carefully planned one (avoid reverting the new time utility names in case they will be re-used in the future & to make syncing newer changes from upstream straightforward otherwise it will not be a one-to-one replacement)

I would love to help with your fork, allocate a worker to build a binary from the CI, create an AUR package (I already studied the systemd arch package a little bit), start using the fork and hopefully with some PRs too. Discord is blocked where I am so it would be cool to have a matrix group / space for this effort and let’s see how far we can push this. Because if this doesn’t work, I will be moving to Artix or Gentoo 100%

@troi@techhub.social tbh I could see people who are considered good programmers in one place but not in another place (just prompting to get things done with minimum effort & reserving the effort for something else). Probably it comes back to interest & care, how much the person is interested in iterating over their solution & architecture + learning things regardless of seniority level to achieve a higher level goal (simpler design for example rather than stopping when it works). Maybe that could be an indication of a good programmer?

yep, they are selling learning models, but they are not pretending medical doctors will be out of work next week like OpenAI is doing

bruh, so it’s not me who was stupid all this time for not being able to put an estimate for large initiatives. It always feels forced to give an estimate.

It has been really fun watching any LLM debugging a bug in a moderately large codebase. It has been so bad in my experience (I really wanted the hype to be real) even in really simple and readable programming languages.

It doesn’t stand a chance though for more complex languages. There was an obvious bug in the way one Rust project was loading a config, decided to “test” Claude sonnet 4.5, I watched it identifying the issue but over engineering paragraphs of new Rust utilities without getting there while the solution was in the second paragraph of the github repo of config-rs, just adjusting the prefix and dropping the separator entry.

That’s a solid point. Even if it looks great (most of the time not). I try to build small predictable parts, refactoring, … Even with all precaution, I find tech debt hidden somewhere weeks and months later.

I use LLMs extensively for work as people think we are faster now but try to avoid letting LLMs write anything for personal projects.

My brief experience is similar, even if conditions are perfect (you treat it like an editor, like this exactly the change you should make, flow exactly this naming and testing styles, run the tests so it’s clear you didn’t screw anything) it will still screw things up here and there.

People aren’t impressed anymore when you slap AI to everything.

I pay for Claude and the CLI agent helps me a lot with boring stuff and that’s the only AI thing I will be ever paying for. I predict price increases, and if it will exceed 50 usd, I will be out and do the boring stuff myself.

I kinda got sucked into that Clippy thing for a while then took a moment to think about like everyone.

Kinda cringe, to adopt anything coming from microsoft for a pro ownership movement.
