A Tennessee woman who sought to undergo sterilization surgery last week was abruptly blocked from receiving the procedure, with hospital staff informing her they decided they had a “duty to protect her sacred fertility.” The woman, Mojo Foster, sought a salpingectomy, a type of surgery that removes fallopian tubes, after several years of trying various birth control methods to no avail.

Two ICE officers have been placed on administrative leave and are accused of lying under oath about an incident in Minneapolis last month involving two Venezuelan immigrants, one of whom was shot in the leg by an agent. After the incident, the two Venezuelan men, Alfredo Alejandro Aljorna and Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, were charged with felony assault, falsely accused of beating an ICE officer with a broom and snow shovel. Sosa-Celis was shot in the right thigh. While the Department of Homeland Security originally claimed the two men had attacked the agent, video evidence and witness testimonies contradicted the accusations. Federal prosecutors in Minneapolis last week dropped the felony assault charges against Aljorna and Sosa-Celis.
Criminal defense attorney Frederick Goetz, who represents Aljorna, says the admission of wrongdoing is “unusual” given that the Justice Department has been zealous in carrying out President Trump’s anti-immigration agenda. It was “not only a dismissal, but a dismissal with prejudice, meaning that my client can never be charged again for anything to do with this incident,” says Goetz.

Amazon, Microsoft and Google run so much cloud infrastructure that it’s not in the power of ordinary peasants like us to even make a dent in their business. When we use pretty much anything online we’re helping support them. And US corporations have little incentive to leave those services because the end users don’t even know what they use for their backends. Foreign governments and companies are the main organizations that have the power to make an impact on big US tech by taking their cloud business elsewhere.
Personally I’d just patch it in software by coding up my own CPU cooler.

I could have happily watched that for a lot longer.
Brazil has something similar. Other US states are working on it. And the UK, some EU countries, Australia and others are pushing for the same. This won’t be just California for long: it’s a worldwide push to make it impossible to do anything involving a computer without first disclosing your real identity to the authorities.
