The “just works” argument IS a valid one and they would have a point – IF Gnome’s defaults were in any way sensible. They aren’t. The entire workflow is a nightmare. (I made the apple comparison – Well, uhh… MacOS is also a walled garden that doesn’t let you change shit, but at least it’s got very decent defaults)
Gnome’s file manager didn’t let you type in FOLDER ADDRESSES until a few months ago, ffs. And sure you could, even then, use an alternative file manager.
… But at that point you are fucking with the premise of “just works”, because you will need to use non-default stuff.
Gnome in general is undeniably made competently by competent and talented people. If it wasn’t, it would break a lot more.
Those competent and talented people also managed to make extremely bad choices at every turn, and seem ideologically opposed to the idea of customization, resulting in an environment that is fundamentally painful to use unless you very specifically fit the box of what they expect users to be like.
It sort of feels like an Apple product, in that sense. Very well-made, but god forbid you don’t want to do things exactly as they say you should

It got a lot of flak back then, mostly because people were sick to shit of Peter Molyneux promising THE WORLD and delivering, like, JUST A GAME.
But here’s the thing. I didn’t follow gaming news. I didn’t know what a Peter molyneux was. I just know I got a fun little action RPG where I get to be royalty, and that scratched a very specific itch for me.
And not to make this even longer, but the people with the means to move to another state much less another country are the wealthy. The poor, who are the ones who might benefit most from moving, are unable to, trapped in the cycle here.
I will say you are mostly right, but also note that all the refugees that have been going everywhere (including into Brazil! We get lots of Haitian and Colombian refugees mostly) since before I was born were exceptionally poor people.

I would wager that for an american coming from like. NY, or Detroit, Brazil would be outright comfy by comparison.
The most “dangerous” cities are Rio, São Paulo, and Salvador. But the thing about the lethality of those cities? Most of the people who are dying aren’t foreign expats like you, it’s the inhabitants of the samesuch poor areas, surrounded by mobsters and having to just deal with that on a day to day basis.
For everyone else? The big urban centers are dangerous to your property. Be careless and you will be mugged. Not pickpocketed. Mugged.
But at the same time Brazil is a pretty large place with lots of different cities. I’ve lived in a medium-to-large city (and NOT one of the famous ones Gringos would know) my entire life and been mugged… Twice. In thirty years. Both were harmless other than the loss of my cell phone.
I am legally mandated (it’s in my country’s constitution I’m pretty sure) to say “come to Brazil” in response to that.
