Cake day: October 8th, 2023

I’m now finally switching away from Windows, bought a new SSD and just set it up, and now I’ve hit a bit of a snag.
I’m using KeePass for password management, but I have my database up on iCloud. The reason for this is because I also have a iPhone and MacBook from which I need to access my passwords and this has been weirdly the most trouble-free and convenient option thus far.

But in the spirit of liberation (and because I don’t want to have to deal with web-based file management) I thought I’d ask around what some good options are. I am renting a VPS so that could be one option, but there I’m also a bit worried about data loss (for example if I stop paying, which is less of an issue since iCloud is free, or they go out of business. yeah I get that Apple bad but they’re a lot less likely to go out of business soon (not that Hetzner is on the verge of bankruptcy but thats my thinking)).

The easiest option would be to just keep it all on my main PC and periodically sync from the other clients, the only issue here is that if my PC is shutdown and I’m not home (which rarely happens luckily) and I haven’t synced recently, I’m fucked.

Option 3 would be to get the stanky raspi I have laying around running, but omg I think it would be more reliably if I just memorized all passwords myself.

Option 4 would be the same as 3 but with the Steam Machine. Which would mean deferring this issue until (or if) they release.

And I’m open to hearing more options that you would recommend.

  • Oh RoR is in no way open world slop. Ubishit execs wish they could make this good of a game (side tangent: I fully believe Ubisoft has the talent to pull this off easily, but the C suite is allergic to good games).
This game has unexpectedly become my “boot up and chill” game for now, and it’s kinda limiting how fast I churn thru my backlog. But I enjoy the fact that it’s a lot lower stakes than Nioh or Dark Souls; with those type of games I have huge startup inertia due to the difficulty.
I’ve also bought wolong and wuchang together with RoR and I am not getting around to playing them hehe.

Oh and if it’s not too late here’s a hint: don’t spend so much time in the character creator for the blade twin you don’t choose as your main one *wink wink

  • The combat isn’t bad, and the animations are really good (especially getting body slammed by a 600 kg sumo wrestler) but to me it just boils down to parrying until an attack window opens.
I know you have quite a few options with status effects and being able to use two weapons in tandem, but I rarely use those features. Regular enemies die too fast to be worth applying poison and bigger ones take so many hits they don’t get poisoned at all.
And why should I switch weapons if my main weapon deals double the damage of my next best weapon.

So at least for me combat is just rhythmic parrying and attacking. Again not bad but I’ve been able to use the same technique in combat for the 10 hours I’ve played so far and nothing has really forced me to adapt to a different playstyle.

Yeah I play on PC and it runs fine for me maxed out with RT but I have a beefy PC.

It’s a really weird mixture of a lot of games so I can kinda understand why people aren’t into it. I’d say the biggest influence on this game is actually Assassin’s Creed. At least in the way the cities and the world is built. And there are NPCs everywhere, which goes a long way into making this game feel alive.

When you’re out in the open riding a long distance to your next objective you’ll see people walking around, maybe a wandering merchant, a cat or a dog to pet, or something else. This makes the riding feel way better than in Elden Ring even tho mechanically they’re practically identical. But in Elden Ring most of your encounters are gonna be combat based or static NPCs. And I really love that vibe in Rōnin.

Also the Yokohama pleasure district is 10/10 gorgeous.

Mini-rant / duh-moment, just had to get this out because I hate that I waited so long.

For context, I’ve been working with Docker since 2014, and back then it was Linux or nothing. Which didn’t really matter to me because I only used Docker and Linux at work.

And I’ve only recently started self-hosting stuff on my home PC, but it’s running Windows, so I’m using the old-school method of clone > build > run. Which, for most projects, works surprisingly well.

But now I wanted to spin up a new service where that method didn’t work, apparently it doesn’t support newer NodeJS versions? But I thought fuck, I want this. And the only other way was Docker.
Lo and behold Docker just runs perfectly fine on Windows now? I know I may be extremely late to the party lmao.

Anyway I just deployed 2 new services in 2 minutes and it feels so good.

Also yes I just rember’d that nvm exists xD so I am REALLY happy I forgor about that.

Wish I hadn’t been so stuck in my ways. Looking forward to installing 1000 more services now hehe. Rant over. Adios!

  • But if you’ve planned your app through and know beforehand you don’t need relational data, you can skip the overhead of a RDBMS.
At least that’s what I would say if I hadn’t been in this exact situation and it later turned out we do need relational data so we had relational documents.
Also working with MongoDB without ODM is pure pain.

  • Yeah the fact that the basic 4x LMB into RMB combo is basically the only combo you can do kinda blows. The abilities do mix it up, but only a little. I hope it gets better since I’m only like 7-8 hours into the game and there’s still new stuff being added to the combat, but it does make a really bad first impression.

I still have a hearty backlog tho and I know Like A Dragon is waiting so the horizon is looking good. And I’m gonna buy Expedition 33 this Christmas sale.

  • Just bounced off of Elden Ring again. It’s a good game but idk starting a fresh playthrough just feels like a slog. And jumping back into my overheated character feels boring. I should remove it from my “favorite game” section on Steam but idk what should replace it.

Another game I’m way more into than I thought is Final Fantasy XVI. I’m not a huge FF fan and have gotten a lot less interested in turn based combat as I got older, so I really like this direction FF is heading into.

Clive and Sid’s VAs sound like 30 years older than their characters and the amount of cutscenes is quite overwhelming, but I’m invested.

I had it on my wishlist for quite some time and the reason why I finally pulled the trigger was a short 50 sec video of someone annihilating a deer with the power of god.
