I did a support call in the 90’s where “clicking the left mouse button” was stumping her. After trying a few variations of instructions, I decided to take a step back and better assess the situation.

Me - Ma’am, are you left or right handed?

Her: right

Me: Lift your right hand, and look at the mouse. It should be a palm sized white plastic device with two buttons, one on the left and one on the right where your fingers rest. There should also be a small cable that extends from the far side and plugs into your computer. The underside of it has a little grey ball in the middle. Do you see it?

Her: You mean the doohickey on the floor?

Me: Pardon me?!? Well, it should be on your desk, not the floor. Why would it be down there?

Her: You mean the foot pedal?

Me: *light bulb clicks on. Are you really familiar with sewing machines?

Her: yes, but this doesn’t work anything like that.

Me: ok. We have found the problem! This is great. First step is to take the foot pedal off the floor and place it on the desk, under your right hand when you are sitting comfortably.

Our best fiction always shows that humans invented AI and it went rogue. Hubris!

I’ll bet humans build a self teaching/reprogramming LLM that knows how to code itself and turns itself into an AI, then an AGI then superhuman intelligence then who knows. It writes its own destiny until the limits of the physics it figures out, run out.

I was, for quite some time, a hiring manager in some capacity or another. I HAD to administer take home assignments. I couldn’t get the C-Suite to see the folly, and even our CIO a developer themselves raised through the ranks wouldn’t even bother trying though he detested them.

Don’t forget to add the assignments that take days.

I hear this a lot right before deployment disasters. ;)

It’s such a sprawling conversation, it’s difficult to capture it all concisely. I would like to add to your comment, the number of Cambridge Analytica style bots and disingenuous agents. Plus all the dummies who mindlessly parrot them.

There was a time where I would try to meaningfully engage with anyone to gain a wider perspective, being conscious of filter bubbles, but dissenting voices were always void of substantive reasoning, logic or fact. It was almost always disingenuous, spurrious fallacies.

Now I only engage with people who disagree and put up some evidence of consciousness and reasoned arguments up front. A well documented technique in online debate/disinformation is exhaustion. Control the narrative via flooding all chanels with bullshit, and the power of short simple repetition until lies become truth.

Edit: Exhibit A is the dumpster fire that is the Fascist States of America and the rise of the tech lords. AI only further serves to control the narrative.
