Anybody else ever use HoTMetaL to make a website?

The Internet is and always will be fiddly. We just keep making it so easy that it looks like magic.

My job has me working on AI stuff and it reminds me a lot of Internet technology back in the 90s.

For instance: I’m creating a local model to integrate with our MCP server. It took a lot of fiddling with a Modelfile for it to use the tools the MCP has installed. And it needs 20GB of VRAM to give reasonably accurate responses.

The amount of fiddling and checking and rough edges feel like writing JavaScript 1.0, or the switchover to HTML4.

Companies get a lot of praise for having AI products, but the reality isn’t nearly as flashy as they make it out to be. I’m seeing some usefulness in it as I learn more, but it’s not nearly what the hype machine says.

This is why I got a mini PC with five Ethernet ports and configured it as a router/pihole.

Everything goes through a WireGuard VPN, and I have DNS that’s private.

And I know it’s secure because I wrote the iptables myself.

I was gonna suggest WireGuard but these are probably less work which is what a business wants.

Another bonus is you have more than just Remote Desktop to manage things.

Postgres is used by highly secure environments and has a public build pipeline.

This is bullshit and/or they are lazy.

He was okay when I explained that the custom Magento plugin was written in Bulgarian and I had to translate it before attempting to understand the convoluted mess I’d been given.

I had a client who thought I was a miracle worker for changing the color of every link on the site in under an hour.

Then he got mad because it took me three days to add one field to a form.

One thing I emphasize in every training I do is that you do not have backups until you know exactly how long it will take to restore.

That way you can tell your boss it’ll take three times as long and be hailed as a miracle worker, as Scotty intended.

Code proof or it didn’t happen.

Extra credit for doing it in Ruby

If you scaled it based on the size of the integer you could get that up to 99.9% test accuracy. Like if it’s less than 10 give it 50% odds of returning false, if it’s under 50 give it 10% odds, otherwise return false.

It’s weird that the server has a .dockerignore file without a Dockerfile.
