  • On the topic of generating traffic: I use a little app off of github called geddit. It essentially uses the RSS feed reddit has and skins it into an app. It’s pretty bare on features since you can’t log in, but you can have a personalized front page. And no ads as well. And nsfw posts/subs aren’t blocked.

That’s my compromise for accessing niche communities without giving reddit traffic.

Edit: It’s an android app. Not really an option if you have an iPhone I guess

  • All the likes of Zelda, Mario, Halo, Pokemon, etc. are going to get forgotten

I disagree. The reason being that video games and gaming of this caliber are completely unheard of in all of human history. We’ve come further in gaming tech over the last couple decades than the grand majority of all humans that have ever existed could even dream.

That being said, as long as emulation exists, there will be fans of big ips. The problem with saying “it’ll get forgotten as soon as the last person stops playing” is that the specific circumstance of modern gaming is unprecedented. People are still out there emulating games that came out in the 80’s. There’s really no rule saying this kind of technology won’t last hundreds or thousands of years like more classical games do.

  • It’s what the old gold used to be. They rebranded it and added a tiny incentive for content creators (like a dollar per gold, regardless of the level of gold, once you reach a certain karma level)

Really it’s just shittier reddit gold and another way reddit is trying to make money off of colorful arrows

  • I seriously considered getting one for my wife about 6 months ago. She’s a casual controller gamer on her laptop, so I thought I’d spring for something with a little quality for her.

I had an official Xbox controller in my hand ready to check out and decided against it because when I looked, there were so many accounts of the controller just falling apart on people. It’s not worth paying a premium $80 for a controller that doesn’t last a year.

She still plays on a 10 year old black 360 controller with a wireless adapter and has zero problems.

  • Try geddit if you’re on android. It’s an app shell for reddits RSS feed. There’s no logging in, and thusly no voting or commenting, but it does allow you to create a front page and it lets you view the first like 30 comments. Also there’s no ads and NSFW content isn’t blocked. It’s pretty good for what it is and you don’t have to give Reddit money.

Find it on GitHub. I know you said you hate it and you’re never going back, and I’m right there with you, but it is nice to check in on some of my favorite Niche subreddits once in awhile

  • Just to add my opinion on this list:

The Etrian odyssey series is uniquely ds/3ds style gameplay with the touchscreen map that you must make yourself. Highly recommend.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 does turn based tactics better than any game I’ve ever played, and I’ve played so many. If you like heavy world building rpgs and turn based battles that are as developed as they come, you owe it to yourself to grab this one on sale. Also, d:os2 is the precursor game and engine that eventually spawned Baldurs gate 3. So there’s that.

Bravely default and bravely second are both lightning in a bottle mixes of story telling and turn based combat. They are spiritual successors to the older final fantasy games by the same studio. The class/subclass system with the brave/default mechanic is absolutely sublime and unlike any other turn based game out there. Plus the story itself is amazing. Definitely worth picking up.

OK, that’s all I wanted to say.
