Ok, that is a totally different use case than mine. I’m one of those guys browsing a selfhosting community on the fediverse and I only want to stream my own stuff to my mobile and provide my wife with audiobooks. If you’re providing a bigger group of people with streaming services, who are not tech savvy, another software might be the better solution. But that doesn’t mean that Jellyfin is bad - it’s just another use case with different requirements

And those lifetime subscriptions are also a trap. They know that you have the money and are willing to pay and that you’re using their service. Do you really think that some business suit will be satisfied by your onetime payment back in 2022?

Yes and no. First of all, there is nobody who wants to take over. So the option is “abandon it” vs. “kill it”. Reddits actions in regard of their mods do have consequences. And it also doesn’t belong to the community as Reddit is actively claiming ownership. So to take your church analogy: The pastor wants to quit. The bishop claims ownership and control of everything, is actively harming the community, but can’t provide a replacement priest.

And in my opinion it is better to stop projects like this instead of abandoning them as abandoned places & subreddits will get taken over by spammers, crazy people and full on nazis.

TBH, it does make sense: Posting a legitimate comment and then editing it after a while is a popular tactic of spammers. Post something, get the top spot and after the post has gone out of the popular queues, edit in your personal spam links and profit from all the sweet traffic coming via Google -> Reddit -> Your site

Yes, you are doing something different here, but for an automated moderating system that looks exactly like a spam attack. Overwrite existing comments with the same post & edit in an external link.

And sadly you need those automated tools as a Reddit mod and if Lemmy is keeping it’s growth, we will need them here, too. Spammers will come and they totally will overwhelm moderators trying to do it manually.

For everybody, who hasn’t that much of paperwork: I’m kind of doing the same, but without barcode stickers. Just scan the document into paperless and then stick it in a box or a folder. If you need the physical document sometimes in the future (which you won’t), paperless of course has the date of the scan / date of the document available. It then it quite easy to take your chronolocical sorted documents and find the one that came in on 2023-04-14

Just be patient. Those new GPUs are so new, expensive and rare that no game has them as target hardware. Stay on your current setup and wait until games are catching up and prices go down.

Let’s be honest - this will kill many subreddits. Of course some mods will start a paid subreddit next to an existing one and try to bring their users to subscribe. So expect those subs to become like those YouTubers who are constantly trying to push you to their Patreon.

You might want to take a look at https://community-scripts.github.io/ProxmoxVE/ . That’s exactly what you want, but without Docker. It uses Proxmox / LXC / VMs and is really, really awesome for selfhosting.

This basically means that OpenAI has a trained model that is able to change political viewpoints. Which also means that this model is available to the Trump administration.

Yeah, the vibe shift is extreme. You can attribute some of it to the general vibe shift everywhere - of course the vibes are getting back when the Trump administration is starting to wreck havoc everywhere. But Reddit is taking this to the extreme - if you take a look at the standard frontpage, there is so much senseless ragebait and screenshots of Tweets of stupid, unimportant people. Videos of random idiots for you to be infuriated over. The fun really has left Reddit - I still remember a time where you could see funny memes and really interesting stuff instead of this.

Some Subreddits are really just reposts of old Twitter posts from several years ago with the same ragebait and the same answers every time.

It’s actually quite simple - not sure how it does work under the hood, but take a look at your documents. Every insurance, employer or company has its own letterhead with logo, contact information and legalese. You just tell paperless on one document “hey, that is my insurance, please tag everything like this as insurance” and it will do that.
