Not sure why this person is getting downvoted. I like many others paid for a lifetime membership. Dev supported the app for few months then ghosted. No explanation or update has been given. Totally abandoned at this point.

1 yearInstead of taking a minute to just read the entire email, they decided to go immediately to the internet to complain. Then when people explained to them multiple times what is going on they decided to argue with them instead of ya know reading the email. The internet is alive and well.

1 yearYeah if you already have a lifetime pass then essentially nothing changes. They also did the right thing about giving people a pretty good heads up to purchase a lifetime pass before they raised the price.
Your users may have gotten the notice (my family didn’t) but they can ignore it if the server owner has a lifetime pass.

Great so why can’t he take 30 seconds out of a year to say that? I’m sure people would understand. The issue everyone is having is the lack of updates. So essentially yes it is abandoned. No updates either way, no word from developer either way been over a year = abandoned.
Great he responded to you but did he say when the next update will be? Or explain the lack of updates? I mean we could all makes guesses but the fact of the matter is it’s been abandoned and in its current state is broken. There is no reason to use it.
Additionally this is hurting Lemmy in general. People will try to use sync for Lemmy because it’s familiar and not realize the issues they are having are with sync because it’s broken not Lemmy. Then stop using Lemmy. I know you’re well intentioned but you shouldn’t give people hope when you know nothing more than anyone else.

I mean all of that is good and well but basically all of this is just your assumption. Its nice that you “believe” this but you don’t speak for the developer.
My issue is we have heard nothing at all from the developer. If the project was alive or just moving slowly I’d imagine we would hear something. Literally anything but we haven’t. If youre going to take people’s money be direct and just let people know what to expect. It’s not difficult to do. That’s great you sent issues to the developer when’s that update coming to fix it? This week, next year, never…

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Intel NUC Homelab - Plex, Immich, Home AssistantEnglish
1 yearI basically run this setup, Synology nas for storage and a nuc12 for proxmox. Things like pihole I run on both for HA. You will also have a much better experience using Plex on an Intel NUC with quick assist.
As mentioned above the helper scripts will save you a ton of time. You should definitely check them out. Proxmox allows you to easily backup and restore. So its much easier to tinker and play around without taking down the whole network.
Yeah it’s pretty upsetting I really liked Sync too. If it helps at all I recently switched to Voyager after trying a few apps. They are all pretty good but for me at least switching to Voyager seemed to be the easiest coming from Sync.
Unfortunately it seems like the dev has abandoned his app. I also used Sync for reddit and was happy to pay for the Lemmy version. Money down the drain. At best it seems that there will be updates every 18 to 24 months, maybe if at all. This may have been fine on reddit but Lemmy is constantly being updated and changing. So the app is more often then not broken or missing functionality in some.way. Honest answer is to find another app and donate to another developer.

1 yearWhen connected through wireguard can you access anything on the local network?
Also sometimes if you’re on an LAN trying to vpn into itself you get weird network issues. Does this issue also happen when you’re on another network and vpning back?
Also there’s a lot of great videos on YouTube to set this up things like Lawrence systems and network Chuck.
Not exactly sure what the issue is here but gave you the up vote for visability and hopefully someone smarter then me will know.
As mentioned backblaze is a good resource as they extensively look into this very question. What I’ve noticed in practice is that all hard drives are pretty reliable these days. If they fail they usually fail early in the first 6 months. Regardless of what you go with always have a back up.
Ok cool 😎
From the Ashai website - “Asahi Linux is a work in progress. Many hardware components are not yet supported!”
Just be warned a lot of people have bricked or nearly bricked their computers just trying to get Ashai installed on their Mac. Daily driver this is not but they are making great progress! It will get there eventually.
I mean technically it does. Isn’t this the Ashai Linux and isnt it very Alpha / Beta stage? As far as I’m aware this is not recommended for anything critical ( per the project maintainers) and unless OP loves tinkering he is most likely going to hit a lot of unique edge case scenarios that require a lot of time to unwind. If you have a very narrow use case this might work but is probably not worth the headache.

2 yearsDocker as mentioned above is great especially if you’re going down the homelab rabbit hole. You’ll find it really useful to get familiar with for future projects.
Another alternative is to install DietPi. It’s an operating system for a raspberry pi. It has all these programs you mentioned with install scripts including docker and installing (and updating) is as easy as checking a box. Also has a pretty good community in case you run into an edge case.

eBay is your friend, Shield came out about 9 years ago so lots on the used market. Also the phoning home for the paranoid can also be handled. Since it’s been around for so long there’s not a lot left someone hasn’t already figured out. Maybe not the perfect answer but worth considering. As a media player it just works and it’s tried and true.

Have you looked into maybe getting a shield and changing out the launcher? It’s a great emulator and will play any video file thrown at it. Worth looking into if you can’t find any sbc alternative.
I have not tried shucking drives but I imagine they should work. Currently have 20tb Seagate ironwolf ST20000NT001. The script takes two seconds to run and needs to be redone everytime you update the Synology software which doesn’t seem to be overly frequent. Running the script or not you have the same full functionality. Script just removes the warnings.
Haha no, I really over did it. Figured it was better to have more then less and even ecc ram is fairly cheap so why not. I eventually wanted to see if it was possible to create a ram disk to run Plex in but I run it and some other *arr programs off the m.2 drives and they are really snappy.
I’m sure you read the same reddit thread I did saying that the xs series only accept Synology drives which is totally incorrect. That being said it will throw up the warning about not using Synology drives or ram but everything works as normal. If the warnings bother you you can run the script from here https://github.com/007revad/Synology_HDD_db And the warnings will go away.

Outside ring a unifi ecosystem is going to be your next best bet. I have four cameras (poe) and the G4 doorbell (wireless). I run protect with a sata SSD drive on the cloudkey gen2+. Everything just pretty much works. I have not tried to use other brand cameras though. The experience is pretty consistent with other unifi gear. From my wifes perspective she has never complained and weve had it for 2 years now. It easy to navigate and always works.
Only thing id note though is you probably want some kind of SSD for the camera storage. A harddrive is probably better long term but without an SSD the video takes longer to load and scrubbing video can get painful. ie your wife will get annoyed. Itll work with an hdd but its just noticeably less snappy.
