So what do you do when you have stock in a private company while still working at it. I imagine if you are heavily compensated with equity you will take going public as an opportunity to offload and diversity.

I do as someone that uses both the Lemmy web interface (as well as photon interface) and Sync App. I actually get confused because there are instances where score is only color coded without an up/down indicator. So color coding consistency is nice across app and web.

Personally, I recommend avoiding pushing releases during holidays if you know post launch support releases might be low, but it would probably lead to criticism of him not updating enough.

Well I think Lemmy World, at least before lemeegrad was defederated from world, had a lot more socialist/marxist types being very vocal in the discourse trying to spin it in that angle. Also weird news sources seemed to be popping up a bit more in lemmy from al jazeera, turkey state media, and other socialist web sites. But I’m not sure if that is just because of how lemmy has less content so lower traffic stuff gets put up on my feed faster than reddit where I still have a lot of subs and a lot more content flowing.

When it comes to comments, both are similar in that it’s hard to have a moderate take that:

1. Israel has justification and responsibility to go after Hamas in response to the massacre.
2. Israel should be measured in their response to avoid civilian death, but they likely won’t.

I just hate how these types of comments seem to be so prevalent on lemmy. This is a thread about some crazy mass shoplifting with bear spray cans and 30 to 50 people involved. Not every convo needs to be a what about ism about communism being good, capitalism bad.

I take more of a Habermasian approach. It’s not means of production and capitalism run amok. It’s more of a colonization of life world by instrumental rationality. I think there are aspects of capitalism that make sense, but the problem is capitalism should not be instrumentalizing governments to further increase capital.

But the other point is, I can’t be an ostrich putting my head in the sand (or maybe this case the clouds). I live in a capitalist world and will likely die in some form of one. So I do practically need to engage in it and get advice on how to navigate it to survive, enjoy life, etc. And right now, it’s hard to find those kinds of people that can discuss navigation of living under the reality of capitalism and day to day shit with the leanings of the Lemmy base today.

Regardless of POV, there’s pretty much no way not to engage in capitalism and support capitalism in some direct or indirect way. It’s everywhere. Even in FOSS.

Hehe. I hope the fediverse gets a bit more popular so the larger community isn’t so hardcore FOSS and FOSS only, so pro piracy, and a little too anti capitalist to the extent Scandinavian democratic socialism points of view get characterized as the pinnacle of capitalist evil.

Yeah. That’s probably a bit more accurate. But I think the main difference is context or contextual targeting can be done without knowing any data about the user, browsing history, etc. I think that has to be the compromise for ad targeting if we want to push for more user privacy and less tracking.

But isn’t this basically like the old days of TV “targeting.” Before we had all data the content was proxy for audience. Day time soap operas were called soap operas because the content was the perfect proxy to reach stay at home wives and sell cleaning products to them. Similar, sports or certain types of comedy shows, etc skew towards a certain audience. So you use the content as proxy for the audience to run your ads against. This contextual targeting seems like that, but a bit more algorithmic in how it detects what the relevant content is based on key words in the text.

I’m here because they killed third party apps and api’s. But the thing is Reddit philosophically has been a for profit company. They make money on ads. In terms of the possible ways to advertise, this isn’t crazy invasive.

Lemmy and the fediverse are not inherently a for profit. So yes, the advertising doesn’t really apply as much.

I just expect the for profit services I use to behave like for profits. And the not for profit services I use to behave like not for profits.

I don’t see the alarm. Key word targeting is used in other digital print forms. Doing ad targeting based on the content of the page is not a bad way to balance the need to increase value of the ad space you sell, while also avoiding the need to target a user specifically based on tracking. It’s no secret reddit makes money selling ads.

Is that the irony of consent. The ad vendor needs to track the opt in/out for a user to understand that users consent.

I imagine it’d be annoying to have a ui to store this, ordeal with deleting accounts referenced… But maybe there should be a theme option in each profile to apply a customized global default or use another designated accounts custom theme? Or maybe I’m overthinking it and should just be a “copy from acct xyz” and apply to this new account and not worry about references to global defaults or other acct configs…

I think it’s really the choice of federation. I imagine it’s against the spirit of federation, but is the answer just to direct people to lemmy.world to first sign up? From there, do what you always did on reddit, but check note that you can sub to other communited not on lenny.world? I just migrated a few days ago, but it was that initial choice that was confusing to me and delayed my signing up.
