Yeah, I learn so much from code reviews and they’ve saved me so much time from dumb mistakes I missed. I’ve also caught no shortage of bugs in other people’s code that saved us all a stressful headache. It’s just vastly easier to fix a bug before it merges than once it breaks a bunch of people.

I completely agree. I think the point of the commenter you’re replying to is that this is the kind of game that will fix these eventually. It’s still disappointing for a launch, but eventually it will probably become better than CS1.

I love such formatters and wish they were even more widespread. In many cases, I really want consistency above all and it’s so dang hard to achieve that without an opinionated formatter. If the formatters isn’t opinionated enough, it just leads to countless human enforced rules that waste time (and lead to an understandable chorus of “why can’t the formatter just do that for meeeee”).

I normally love tabs and it’s what Go uses both by convention and it’s semi opinionated formatter. But PEP-8 suggests spaces and ultimately, consistency is more important.

Not having to argue about tabs vs spaces lets us focus on the real problems, like vim vs emacs.

Ugh, there’s some parts of YAML I love, but ultimately it’s a terrible format. It’s just too easy to confuse people. At least it has comments though. It’s so dumb that JSON doesn’t officially have comments. I’ve often parsed “JSON” as YAML entirely for comments, without using a single other YAML feature.

YAML also supports not quoting your strings. Seems great at first, but it gets weird of you want a string that looks like a different type. IIRC, there’s even a major version difference in the handling of this case! I can’t remember the details, but I once had a bug happen because of this.

Performance wise, both YAML and JSON suck. They’re fine for a config file that you just read on startup, but if you’re doing a ton of processing, it will quickly show the performance hit. Binary formats work far better (for a generic one, protobuffers has good tooling and library support while being blazing fast).

Many games I play automatically determine pretty reasonable settings. And worst case, you can always lean towards lower settings.

There’s a perfectly valid use case for opinionated languages that don’t let you get away with that. It’s also similar to how go has gofmt to enforce a consistent formatting.

Honestly, I’ve been using Go for years and this unused variable error rarely comes up. When it does, it’s trivial to resolve. But the error has saved me from bugs more often than it has wasted my time. Most commonly when you declare a new variable in a narrower scope when you intended to assign to the variable of the same name (since Go has separate declare vs assign operators).

As annoying as it is when someone else breaks the CI pipeline on me, it is utterly invaluable for keeping the vast majority of commits from being able to break other people (and from you breaking others). I can’t imagine not having some form of CI to preventing merging bad code.

Right? It’s already bad enough how it feels like the sole purpose of every blog is to push affiliate links. Every product review I have to wonder if the author for paid for it. Every YouTube video feels like the creator will push whatever scam pays them money.

Actually, on the YouTube video note, Legal Eagle has a great video about how many YouTubers pushed this scam claiming you could “buy an official lord/lady title by purchasing a 1 square foot plot of land in Scotland”. Basically a rehash of those star registries from the early 2000s. So many massive YouTube channels promoted them with blatantly false claims. And frankly every time I see a VPN ad (because it feels like pretty much every YouTube channel is sponsored by one or another), I just know they’re going to make misleading claims.

Python is superior for string anything (parsing, searching, manipulating). But Bash is much simpler for running existing CLI tools. Plus you should already be using Bash as a simple terminal language already, so wrapping what you’re used to into a simple script flows naturally.

Eg, if I have some admin tool for updating a user thingamajig, a common scripting need is just running that tool for every user in a file (or the output of another command). The string manipulation that often requires is annoying in bash, but running the commands is easier than Python.

Going in blind is the best. Unfortunately, it’s probably pretty difficult to do, since spoilers are extremely rampant. I don’t even know how I managed to do it. But it really is magical if you go in blind.

You can hate Facebook and understand that this is a shitty law. To be fair, if you aren’t in the loop on what the law is, it’s easy to accidentally think it’s a reasonable law. When I first heard of it, I assumed it was just preventing companies from stealing articles and keeping news sites from getting clicks. After all, that’s a real problem and a totally reasonable solution.

But nope, the law actually prohibits linking to a news site without having an agreement to pay them. Yes, linking. I really hope it’s obvious how dumb such a law is. They wrote the law to only apply to super big corporations. Otherwise this post would have had to pay Global because you linked to it. Similarly, copying any part of the article in any amount also needs to pay them. Even the headline and tagline that Lemmy shows. It’s hypocritical that anyone cheers this on when this very post wouldn’t comply with the law.

I agree with you on those special weapons. I dunno why the heck they made those so rare or expensive while also not being that durable. I don’t find it an issue for most normal weapons, though, especially with the fuse mechanic in TotK. I like how it forces me to vary things up and allows for regular treasure chests or drops to actually give you something you can use (even if it’s basically like a short lasting consumable).

I’m all for collectibles when they’re interesting, meaningful, and not too numerous. But I think most games and especially open world games really just want to pad the completionist time.

Horizon is a game that did collectibles much better, with the exception perhaps of data points (which aren’t marked on the map for some reason). The collectibles in Horizon are unique, have story, and are usually actually interesting to get to. I noticed often in Horizon, they were just so interesting to either get to (the case for ornaments) or had fascinating story (like the ones that unlock images of the past).

I usually dislike weapon durability (eg, in Fallout), but Zelda is the one game where I actually liked it. Perhaps because in Zelda, it was a central mechanic that the game was designed and balanced around.

For most games, durability is something that the game isn’t really designed around and feels more forced in. When you can repair your gear (as you usually can), durability just means every now and then you gotta deal with the annoyance of repairing.
