I saw this coming as soon as they killed the old mobile site. I generated a new gmail address to placate Reddit’s requirements, just in case I needed to modify old comments. Of course I unfortunately realized they were backing up and restoring old comments anyways, and that most of it was likely sold before the API debacle. But I can still get back in whenever I want, not that I really want to. Just like Digg. And Fark.

Don’t be a completionist.
But how do I avoid feeling that horrible sense of emptiness? It’s not done until it’s 100%…

2 yearsBuild her a server, install it at her house, set up some sort of automated DVD ripping mechanism so that she can digitize her own collection, wait for the inevitable tech support call, then go spend a Sunday afternoon fixing her server and digitizing her collection for her while she makes you dinner. You get to call it “quality time”, and you get fed while keeping her happy and her collection as far away from yours as possible. Win/win, everyone is happy.

2 yearsGive them some credit. They’ve finally changed the user name generator to random words instead of Adjective_Noun_####.

I learned a long time ago that the manufacturer doesn’t matter much on the long run. They all have a bad model occasionally. I have 500GB Seagate drives that still work, and some 1TB drives that died within a year. I’ve had good luck with recent WD Red 4TB drives, but my 2TB Green drives have all died on me. I had a some of the Hitachi Deskstar drives that worked perfectly for years when no one would touch them because of a bad production run. I currently have a Toshiba 8TB that I had never heard of before, but seems to be rock solid for the last year.
Pick a size that you want, look at what’s available, and research the reasonably priced ones to see if anyone is complaining about them. Review sites can be useful, but raw complaints in user forums will give you a better idea of which ones to avoid.
While that may be true, this is still likely an automated response built by a script that found some keywords on your profile. I still get the occasional proposition for RPG work, and I haven’t touched an AS/400 in over a 20 years which my profile reflects. I haven’t even touched my profile in years. But the script doesn’t care about that. That’s for the HR rep to filter out later if you respond.
The upside to this is that you can still make good money as a legacy programmer. Just look at COBOL job listings.
The rockets are fine. SpaceX has a team specifically designed to distract Musk and keep him away from the actual work on the rockets. Tesla didn’t have that though. That’s how we ended up with that lame presentation with the weird “S3XY” acromin. That was really the point I realized that he was just an idiot frat boy with too much money. He really is his own worst enemy.
Welcome to the consequences of driving away competent moderation…

When they removed old.compact shortly before the API debacle, which was really the only way to view a relatively functional site on mobile without a constant nag popup begging you to download the app, I knew the end was near. I had started looking for alternatives at that time. Chatter about alternatives really started to ramp up around then from what I could tell. I think everyone knew what was coming. I’m not sure there will be a surge, since most people that cared likely bailed long ago. Anyone still using old.reddit is viewing it from a desktop, and probably already has a Lemmy account.
The battle is already over. Reddit just needs to get to IPO so Spez can cash out with more than he got the first time. Then it’s someone else’s problem.
And I will accept that you’re trying to gaslight me by comparing meme catchphrases that really provide no value with genuine naturally evolved dialects. Have a nice day.
I’ve already specified the type of comment that I’m referring to. Trying to drag this discussion into a direction where you can more easily win doesn’t actually prove your point.
If that’s true, then why are you perpetuating it?
Right, so please let’s not bring the bullshit along at the same time.
I’m suggesting that using a catchphrase as just a generic comment that could essentially be used on any meme is a low effort attempt at gaining reputation points. There was no message conveyed with it, no value was imparted to the discussion, and now we’re talking about how I’m the one with the non-conducive attitude and not about the actual subject…
The post title is the new mantra since the Reddit exodus, connected to very relevant content. It’s not just a low quality comment void of any nuance and designed solely to capture upvotes from the lowest common denominator…kinda like what they do on Reddit.
No, the lame catchphrase comments that are the equivalent of “first post”.

I think the scarier thing is the part where a user has 66 comments, 77 comment karma, and 109,000 post karma. How are comments not upvoted more when post karma is that high? If you made a good post, the comments you make in that post should be upvoted relatively the same. Why is no one getting comment upvotes when it “appears” to be popular?
