We are going to start seeing a bunch of Chinese memes on the fediverse, aren’t we?

Chinese speaking people are pretty good at memes, so I wouldn’t mind that as long as its not just more Tankie memes like Hexbear used to spam.

I would guess that your average PRC citizen is less likely to be a tankie than your average hexbear.

                  Good point.

I don’t know enough about their language. Do speakers of Mandarin and Cantonese use the same alphabet?

Chinese uses ideograms, which are the same for all dialects and are even used in Japan.

That’s good, thanks for the info.

They also developed a way of writing with roman characters (called pinyin) so they could type on computers and phones. Taiwan developed a different method and Japan uses its own alphabet .

You say that like it’s a bad thing. We have more in common with the average Chinese citizen than we do with our government, our wealthy and our celebrities.

Not a bad thing at all. The more we communicate, the more we might actually find in common. It’s already happening with both sides realising how the government is restricting them in different ways.

                                  Yeah, you can stop that.

They’re already working overtime to separate the userbases by IP to prevent too much cross communication. There will be no more of this unless additional action is taken to strengthen the connection and shut down censorship efforts.
