not myself, but my stepdad tried it with 2 decades of IT and linux sysadmin experience.
basically, it is great if you want to host like 2 or 3 standalone services on a pi to get into understanding how the basics of selfhosting work, but for homelabs and deep customization, you’re better off with docker compose on debian/ubuntu server.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•I don't get the love for Nextcloud - alternative for just files?English
1 yearby now i use nextcloud for everything except files. i do use it a lot for e.g. contacts, calendar, etc.
sshfs is simply a godsend for true instant easy multidevice file access

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Vest way to host nextcloud that isn't the all in one container?English
1 yearnowadays, might be worth looking into nix flakes
tons of super performant nextcloud flakes being uploaded to github, difficulty is understanding nix, but it’s worth it
have you tried using a vpn, e.g. tailscale?
extremely easy to set up, if you are a selfhost purist, there’s headscale as a direct alternative.
only really good at doing stuff in a personal workspace, not really made for exposing to the public internet, still very possible tho
