  • In my experience it is more the reverse is true. If a program truly craps out on me in windows i could at least get the task manager to show / use it to terminate the offender or reboot, at least back when i still used it.

Meanwhile my bazzite task manager is notably not a native part of the OS and takes a few seconds to load, and if the system is in some sort of frozen screen state my only real recourse is hitting the physical force reboot button. The windows manager could sometimes recover from those.

Overall it is of course a much better experience compared to Windows regardless, but still. Everything being essentially modular pieces compiled into a system can evidently also have minor downsides.

  • Imagine being born 10000 years ago where chances that you died before adulthood were significant and even a minor infected cut would likely mean your death, not to mention any more serious injury such as a broken bone 🥰

Don’t get me wrong I hate modern wage slavery just as you do but I also appreciate not being dead yet just because I had a rough accident three years ago.

  • First of all, I don’t have a horse in this race. My media is stored locally and used only by my household. I really don’t give a shit if a corporation needs more revenue to satisfy their infinite growthTM.

My issue is with how they are doing it. Provide an extra service or function, introduce a higher tier with priority treatment or so. Thats fine with me.

What’s not fine is taking something away people used to get for free, because the shitty venture capital business model isn’t feasible and only provided these things to capture the market, and now comes the nickel and diming part of providing ever fewer services and functions for ever increasing amounts of money.

As for jellyfin, thats open source AFAIK. So why even mention that here as some sort of gotcha? If it enshittifies people will fork it and move on.

  • From the Führer perspective it makes perfect sense.

What do you do when you are a totalitarian ruler afraid of ambitious upstarts? You give them administrative responsibility, and then subtly pit them against each other, making them tear each other down while competing for your favor. And if push comes to shove you use the conflicting jurisdictions to accuse whoever comes out on top of abuse of power.

  • You have to remember that the left in america is not in fact left at all. Just that the political spectrum got purged of anything left of full blown capitalism during the red scare, and now “the left” is entirely the same as the right, aside from their social policies.

Both are capitalist, pro deregulated free market money loyalists who have successfully reframed the left vs right question from an economic to a social one, and are perfectly content having the peasants bicker over reproductive rights and immigration, neither of that endangers the capital.

So with this added context, the reddit population is actually predominantly liberal to progressive. Lemmy is definitely more left leaning though, for better or worse (tankies 🤧)

  • It isnt so much “we" as in humanity, it is a select few very ambitious and very reckless corpos who are pushing for this, to the detriment of the rest (surprise).

If “we” were able to reign in our capitalists we could develop the technology much more ethically and in compliance with the public good. But no, we leave the field to corpos with delusions of grandeur (does anyone remember the short spat within the openai leadership? Altman got thrown out for recklessness, investors and some employees complained, he came back and the whole more considerate and careful wing of the project got ousted).

  • The whole idea is a grift. They are directly appealing to people who largely should not be buying shares due to their financial situation and are a lot less critical of the pretty poor numbers they published than professional exploiters investors will be.

Obviously this is done in hopes of selling more shares and binding users long term, though that will probably just accelerate the enshittification because suddenly the last remaining power users are turned into shareholders instead
