• Holy shit…

I knew people kept wanting to use an app over a website…

But my web browser can’t show any ads in the first place…

So you all are just paying $17 a month and handing your data in a nice neat package over?

Because you don’t want to use a browser?

That is insane, why would anyone pay that?

    Edit:

It’s $17 annually, so much less of a big deal.

That’s typical range for supporting a small project.

The premium sub for Sync also includes other perks that users might find helpful. An app is also nice if you want a view that’s tailored to your screen. It lets you save, hide and customize posts and comments with ease.

I’m on the free plan myself and it’s great just to be able to curate my feed and manage multiple accounts. I don’t need much else, but I can definitely see why people pay for the convenience.

        For $17 a month tho?

Like, I just can’t imagine anything that’s worth it with as little content is on Lemmy

Like, OP has made this single post, and two comments over the 6 months of their account. Even if they’re lurking 24/7, there’s just not enough content for $17/month on any social media platform. It’s $200 a year, that’s not insignificant money even if there was something the app did a website doesn’t.

Is this just me getting older and being out of touch?

I mean, I understand why companies are selling it.

Just not why anyone is using an app, let along paying for it.

I mean, password managers aren’t complicated, and each account is individual so everything would stay straight… Hell, I browse the website on a phone browser that doesn’t save anything and I have to randomly sign back in. It still takes just a finger press on my password manager.

I dunno, I’m not trying to convince you you’re making terrible choices and should stop.

It’s just everytime I hear about these unnecessary apps, I’m just dumbstruck.

It doesn’t make any sense to me. Maybe I’m just old now?

          • Thanks, that makes a lot more sense, I can see throwing $20 a year to support something like this.

OP’s per month was just insane

I don’t think OP is paying that monthly. It’s 18,99 a year for me, or 114,99 for a lifetime sub. $19/year is a lot more feasible to throw at an app you like to use because it makes browsing Lemmy a lot easier.

Here’s a screenshot of the perks so you don’t need to imagine anything. Whether it’s worth it is up to the individual. Usually people pay for a sub because they want one or a few perks and consider the rest a bonus.

I can tap on the top of my screen and then switch accounts with a tap on the username. No logging in required and feed refreshes automatically. This is one example but the answer to all your “why’s” is mostly the same: convenience.

Personally I am well aware of the caveats but for the reasons stated earlier it’s working out so far for me. I think you started off on the wrong foot thinking it’s 17 a month and not being aware of what perks a premium app could offer.

You aren’t paying 16.99/mo, please edit your post because it’s confusing some people.

Yes, but free software can also have bugs, so that’s no reason not to buy this software ;)

My point is the dev doesn’t support the app anymore but still charges you monthly

Okay, that was not very clear from your comment! :)

On what grounds do you base your assumptions? Or is that something you just invented? ;)

He did what? Where on Reddit can I read it? Still not sure what you mean. :)

They don’t know what they are talking about. The dev is known to dissappear for random lengths of time, he always comes back and codes like crazy and then needs a break. He was around and supporting the reddit version of sync right up until the end. An update was released for this version of the app on November 29th. I’m guessing this commenter thinks that apps have to be updated consistently to show they are being supported. Aside from the features being worked on, if there aren’t any bugs to squash, why push an update?
